Discovering Khe Sanh: Cloud Hunting and Capturing Moments at the Iconic 'Wind Farm'

Khe Sanh truly captivates visitors, drawing them in with its ethereal, undulating sea of clouds and the expansive beauty of its wind farms. Together, these elements create a majestic natural landscape that leaves a lasting impression.
Cloud Hunting in Khe Sanh: Touching the Sky in the Vast, Windy Mountains
You don't need to travel far; in Khe Sanh, visitors can witness a stunning 'sea of clouds' gracefully drifting alongside a vast wind farm. Amidst this expansive and breathtaking scenery, travelers' eyes are opened to the sheer beauty of nature.
Heading from the lowlands up to Khe Sanh (Huong Hoa District, Quang Tri Province) to enjoy exciting activities like cloud hunting, backpacking, and mountain climbing has become a popular choice for many travelers. Ms. Do Thi Ly Ly and her best friend recently embarked on a trip to Khe Sanh, creating many unforgettable memories.

The stunning 'sea of clouds' in Khe Sanh.
“Khe Sanh is an emerging destination with natural beauty that hasn't been heavily developed for tourism, so it's still relatively unknown. It's also conveniently located right next to Quang Binh province, making it perfect for a weekend two-day trip,” Ly Ly shared, explaining her choice of Khe Sanh for her journey.
According to Ly Ly, the trip was a great success, especially for their cloud-hunting goal. They managed to capture an entire sea of clouds and were also impressed by the local approach to tourism.
“I was really impressed by how thoughtfully and considerately people communicated and catered to tourists' needs. The friendly locals made us feel right at home. I love the natural beauty here. It's a small town, but there's so much to discover. I was lucky enough to meet new friends and locals who are incredibly passionate about their hometown of Khe Sanh and enthusiastically showed me the best spots to visit and delicious, affordable places to eat,” Ly Ly recounted.

Travelers were lucky enough to catch the clouds.
In the cool weather, Ly Ly and her companions enjoyed a hiking experience. For the first time, she ventured deep into the forest, encountering many unusual plants and animals. This will forever be the most memorable experience of her nature trip, for this traveler from Quang Binh.
Ly Ly recounted that after resting in Khe Sanh town, everyone woke up, prepared their gear, and set out for a 'luck test' cloud hunt and a hike. Upon arrival, they successfully found plenty of clouds, witnessing firsthand the breathtaking sight of the 'sea of clouds' gracefully drifting by. Immersed in the cool weather, the group of travelers admired the stunning natural beauty of the mountains and forests. It was the first time Ly Ly had seen the wind farm surrounding the 'sea of clouds.' That impressive image has stayed with her and remains etched in her memory to this day.
After successfully cloud hunting and taking photos, the whole group moved on to have breakfast and coffee, recharging their energy before starting their hiking journey to admire Khe Sanh's version of autumn leaves.
“After crossing a few small streams, we finally reached the most beautiful spot. The leaves aren't fully red this season, but it was still enough to feel perfectly 'chill.' The hike was quite tiring due to the uphill and downhill climbs, so you definitely need to bring water and some snacks. Around 1 PM, I started descending the mountain and headed for lunch. Feeling a bit tired, I opted for a light meal of 'banh uot thit nuong' (steamed rice rolls with grilled pork) and 'bun hen' (clam noodle soup) before heading back to rest,” Ly Ly shared.

Travelers didn't forget to capture photos as souvenirs.
On this trip, Ly Ly met new friends who were enthusiastic and thoughtful, eager to introduce this misty land near the Lao Bao border gate to more people. She believes that with such heartfelt dedication, Khe Sanh – the land of mist – will surely welcome many new visitors.
After resting at their homestay, travelers headed to one of the top cafes for stunning sunset and sunrise views. Homi Coffee offers a panoramic view of the distant sky, where you can also see water being released from the hydroelectric dam. After enjoying the sunset, visitors moved on to savor spicy, sour, and delicious Lao cuisine.
A new day began with everyone having breakfast at a 'million-dollar view.' They then visited Rose Farm for coffee and to relax amidst the distant wind turbine fields. Afterwards, they went souvenir shopping, then had lunch at the same Lao restaurant as the day before...

An exciting adventure.
Concluding her trip to the western mountainous border region of Quang Tri province, Ly Ly experienced all the wonderful things Khe Sanh has to offer. From the majestic mountain scenery to the picturesque wind farm roads. Surrounded by mountains, hills, rivers, and streams, travelers can breathe in the crisp, cool air, which is incredibly refreshing.
“As someone who loves experiential travel and trying new things like cloud hunting and mountain climbing, I will definitely return to this misty town with my friends...” Ly expressed.
