Journey to the 'Land of Churches' and marvel at its fairytale cathedrals.

Nam Dinh is famously known as the "Land of Churches," home to over 600 magnificent religious structures boasting stunning Gothic and Roman architecture.
As a region where Christianity was introduced to Vietnam quite early and serves as a prime example of religious and cultural exchange in the country, it's not difficult to encounter magnificent and grand church architecture when visiting Nam Dinh.
The Catholic churches in Nam Dinh bear the ancient Western charm, set amidst the typical rural landscapes of the Red River Delta. This creates a unique picture, offering both historical value and significant potential to boost local tourism. Let's explore some of the most famous churches you definitely shouldn't miss when visiting Nam Dinh.
Kien Lao Sanctuary

The distinctly Western architecture of Kien Lao Sanctuary.
Located in Xuan Tien Commune (Xuan Truong District), its presence dates back to the 16th century – the earliest period when the Gospel arrived in Vietnam, making it one of the first five parishes of the Dang Ngoai Diocese. In 1993, after the original wooden sanctuary severely deteriorated, it was completely rebuilt, with the current structure taking 4 years to complete.

Kien Lao Sanctuary was built to resemble the Our Lady of Bui Chu Cathedral, measuring 75m long, 26m wide, 28m high, and featuring a bell tower rising 46m.

A prominent feature of the structure's architecture is its design and decoration with intricate bas-relief statues, a wide domed roof, and a soaring bell tower, all set amidst a serene lake and romantic streetlights.

The structure was built and completed by the people of Kien Lao themselves.
The talent and skill are also strengths of the Kien Lao people, as the area has long been famous for its traditional crafts of casting, bronze work, fine arts, and mechanics.
Phu Nhai Minor Basilica

A distinguishing feature of Phu Nhai Minor Basilica is its two bell towers, housing four bells imported from France, one of which weighs 2 tons and is only rung on major feast days.
When talking about the most beautiful churches in Thanh Nam, one certainly cannot overlook the mystical, ancient, and majestic architecture of Phu Nhai Minor Basilica. The church was first built in 1866. In 1881, Phu Nhai Church was rebuilt in an East Asian style, then transformed into a European style in 1916.
Subsequently, the church was rebuilt again and completed in 1933. At that time, Phu Nhai was the largest church in Indochina. After being damaged during wartime, it underwent extensive renovation and was fully restored to its current appearance in 2004. Given its long history and remarkable architecture, in 2008, the Vatican issued a decree elevating Phu Nhai Church to a Minor Basilica.

According to local parishioners, Phu Nhai Church was modeled after a church in France, featuring French architecture, and built by Vietnamese people.
Situated on a plot of approximately 2,160 m2, Phu Nhai Church, despite undergoing several renovations, has retained the exquisite features of Gothic architecture, with a length of 80m, width of 27m, height of 30m, two towers soaring 44m, and a dominant white and blue color scheme. Unlike many other churches, Phu Nhai also boasts bas-relief statues on its doors and along its sides, along with decorative Chinese characters.

The sanctuary is where many important rituals of Catholics in Nam Dinh take place.
Having undergone land reclamation and sea encroachment alongside the people in Nam Dinh's coastal districts, the local Catholic and non-Catholic communities here have united, working together to withstand storms. From then on, prosperous villages and parishes like those seen today were formed and developed, fostering harmony and solidarity among the people.
Thanh Danh Parish

The ancient charm of Thanh Danh Church impresses everyone who visits.
Unlike many other grand, modern church structures, Thanh Danh Parish enthralls visitors with its ancient charm, epitomizing the Renaissance architectural style that emerged during Vietnam's trade interactions with the West in the late 16th century.

Beyond the beauty of a Catholic church, this place also preserves many biblical stories through its decorative bas-relief paintings.
Luc Thuy Parish Church

Luc Thuy Parish bears many ancient hallmarks.
Luc Thuy Parish is one of the churches in Nam Dinh uniquely situated right in the middle of a residential area.

The church's ancient hues.
The structure was first built in 1880 and has undergone several instances of damage, requiring restoration and renovation. Beside the main tower, the surrounding architectural wings create a beautiful complex.

According to architect Bui Vinh, of AHV Architectural Design (Hanoi), the long-standing Catholic churches in Nam Dinh all possess a timeless beauty. The ancient, magnificent, and solemn classical architectural styles such as Roman, Gothic, and Baroque have left distinctive imprints on the churches in each region. This enduring historical value, combined with the characteristic European architectural forms introduced to Vietnam, is precisely what attracts tourists from both within and outside the country.
"Besides churches that fully inherited Western architectural styles, many Catholic religious structures in Nam Dinh province lean towards an Eastern aesthetic, drawing inspiration from the communal house architecture of the Northern Vietnamese countryside to integrate into Catholic spaces, creating a sense of familiarity," shared architect Bui Vinh.
Recently, with its position as a leading locality in new rural development and beautifying rural landscapes, Nam Dinh province's tourism sector has collaborated with relevant units to vigorously promote local tourism, drive digital transformation, and enhance the tourism workforce. This includes developing orientations and plans to leverage the value of its system of churches, integrating them with local culture and beliefs. Consequently, this promotes the image of "Vietnam's most beautiful land of churches" and strengthens the spirit of solidarity between Catholic and non-Catholic residents, organizing many activities that contribute to a good life and a beautiful faith, thereby helping to build up the homeland.
According to statistics, Nam Dinh has 172 parish churches, 492 filial churches, and over 470,000 parishioners (accounting for 25% of the population). Many other famous churches include the Bui Chu Bishop's Complex, Ninh Cuong Sanctuary of Our Lady, Hung Nghia Sanctuary, Xuong Dien Church, Trung Linh Church, Quan Phuong Church, Quan Lieu Church, Nam Dinh Grand Church, Hai Ly Ruined Church, Khoai Dong Church…
Currently, the Bui Chu Bishop's Complex and the Nam Dinh Grand Church are undergoing renovation and restoration.
