Prenn Pass Da Lat – The Poetic, Majestic, and Most Beautiful Gateway Road to the City of a Thousand Flowers
On the journey to Da Lat, the city of a thousand flowers, travelers will conquer Prenn Pass, a road that feels like a stunning natural masterpiece, captivating hearts with its wonderful winding curves and pristine beauty.
Sitting in the car on the way to Da Lat city, a reporter from the Journalists and Public Opinion Newspaper heard many interesting stories about Prenn Pass. Throughout the journey, many travelers were quite curious about its name. Mr. Nguyen Moc Tien, a tour guide, held a microphone and enthusiastically explained everyone's questions.
“Prenn Pass is located in Lam Dong province, on National Highway 20 (QL20), and is about 11km long, within Ward 3, Da Lat City. From here, it's another 12km to reach the city center. Compared to other passes in Da Lat, Prenn Pass isn't the longest or the most dangerous, but it is considered the most beautiful,” Mr. Tien explained.

Although there are several mountain passes on the journey from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat, Prenn Pass is arguably the most impressive due to its grandeur and spectacular views. According to Mr. Tien, this isn't just an ordinary pass; it also holds a fascinating historical story.
Regarding the pass's name, "Prenn" means "invasion" in the Cham language. According to local folklore, the area of the pass was inspired by Prenn Waterfall, a unique and famous natural landmark of Da Lat. From these origins, the name Prenn has been used ever since.
As we listened, we gazed outside, silently marveling at how generously nature had bestowed so much beauty upon this pass, attracting countless travelers from afar. The pass road winds gracefully like a silken ribbon dropped by Mother Nature, curving around the majestic Prenn Waterfall. On both sides of the road, rolling hills stretch endlessly, covered in vast, straight pine forests.
Amidst this scenery, Ms. Hong Anh (a tourist) shared: “The air here is so fresh and cool, bringing an incredibly relaxing and refreshing feeling. With every kilometer, the natural landscape unfolding before my eyes is both majestic and poetic. The higher we go towards the hilltop, the more splendid nature becomes.”

In the car, Mr. Tien continued to recount the history of the pass. According to him: “The project to build the pass road began in February 1943 by contractor Gross, replacing the old pass section from Prenn Waterfall to Da Lat city center. The new pass road was designed with 79 curves, some with a radius of up to 1,000 meters, creating its distinctive winding and appealing character.”
The decision to restore the original Prenn Pass road and create the parallel Mimosa Pass was made in the early 2000s. This was an effort by the authorities to expand Prenn Pass to meet increasing traffic demands and improve the regional transportation system. However, the plan for one-way traffic on Prenn Pass and Mimosa Pass was not fully implemented, leading Mimosa Pass to become primarily a route for transporting agricultural products from Da Lat to other provinces and cities.
The year 2016 marked a significant turning point for Prenn Pass. The Ministry of Transport decided to reroute National Highway 20 to Mimosa Pass, while Prenn Pass became a local road managed by the Department of Transport of Lam Dong province. This change created diversity and a functional division in connecting Da Lat city with neighboring areas.”
No sooner had he finished the story of the pass's history than the driver pulled over at a waterfall. Mr. Tien pointed out that this was the famous Prenn Waterfall he had mentioned earlier. The waterfall's abundant water cascades down from a height, creating a scene like a soft silk ribbon amidst the vast mountains and forests.

Many young adventurers also love to explore and seek the thrill of driving and navigating the winding curves of the pass. We quickly interviewed a young traveler, Manh Quan, who stopped along the way. He shared: “This road gives me an incredible sense of excitement. It's not too challenging, doesn't have sharp turns like other passes, and the gradient isn't too steep, which makes us feel safe and comfortable on the journey.”
As we continued our drive, Mr. Tien recounted a spooky story related to a large, abandoned villa on the pass. This deserted mansion was once associated with ghostly tales, sending shivers down the spines of many visitors. However, in recent years, the villa has been renovated and redecorated, no longer carrying its former gloomy atmosphere. People have even given it friendlier names like the White Villa or Prenn Pass Villa. He also mentioned the cherry blossom garden, which, when in bloom, adds a gentle beauty amidst the fresh greenery of the vast pine forests. The vibrant apricot blossoms brighten the scene, making the pass even more charming and captivating than ever.

Ms. Hong Tien (a tourist from Saigon) leaned in and confided: “A few years ago, my family had the chance to visit Da Lat during Tet (Lunar New Year) and witnessed the cherry apricot blossoms here. From a distance, it looked like a long pink silk ribbon. My children absolutely loved it; the beauty here is truly magnificent.”
Following Prenn Pass, travelers also shouldn't miss attractions like Datanla Waterfall Tourist Area, Robin Hill Cable Car, Maple Leaf Tourist Area, and Bali Heaven Gate – Green Hills. It's advisable for visitors to choose a suitable travel time and plan their itinerary for a smoother journey.
Just as Mr. Tien said, Prenn Pass is not only a beautiful mountain road but also a cultural and tourist treasure that Da Lat proudly possesses. As dusk began to fall outside, the dreamy atmosphere prompted every traveler in the car to raise their phones to capture this memorable moment, and the space suddenly fell silent. The bus continued its journey towards the poetic city of Da Lat…
