The Ethereal Masterpiece: 'Long vân khế hội'

Discover the 'Long Vân Khế Hội' painting – a stunning masterpiece of dragon artistry that graces the ceiling of Diệu Đế Pagoda's main hall in Hue. This incredible work has been perfectly preserved, fully intact, after a truly miraculous relocation.
The mural "Long Van Khe Hoi" (Meeting of Dragons and Clouds), a masterpiece on the ceiling of the old main hall of Dieu De National Pagoda, is now surprisingly well-preserved after being relocated further back. This painting was the subject of intense debate years ago regarding whether to keep the old main hall or dismantle it. Dismantling it would have meant the destruction of this masterpiece.

Relocating the Main Hall to Preserve a Dragon Painting Masterpiece
The pagoda decided to preserve this artwork by hiring the renowned "divine mover" Nguyen Van Cu from Ho Chi Minh City to relocate the main hall. Thanks to this effort, the magnificent dragon painting remains perfectly intact today. During the Spring Festival of Giap Thin (2024), we revisited this ancient pagoda, located at 110 Bach Dang Street, facing the Dong Ba River, to admire this exceptionally rare masterpiece.
The old main hall of Dieu De National Pagoda was successfully moved nearly 20 meters back from its original position in late 2022 by the "divine mover" Nguyen Van Cu and his team, with the aid of modern heavy machinery. This decision was considered quite bold by the pagoda, made after extensive calculations and deliberation. After more than a month, the main hall, weighing over a thousand tons, was successfully relocated. At the time, ensuring the safety of the relocation was paramount, but equally crucial was preserving the painting's integrity at all costs.

The old main hall of Dieu De Pagoda, after being relocated further back, has been renovated and reinforced.
After being moved to its new location, the main hall underwent a grand renovation. While the original altars were preserved, the interior space now houses cabinets filled with scriptures, serving the study and practice of the pagoda's monks and nuns.
Viewed from below, the "Long Van Khe Hoi" masterpiece remains perfectly intact and radiant, as if no prior changes or relocation had occurred. The painting, over 10 meters long and nearly 11 meters wide, covers almost the entire ceiling of the main hall. It depicts five dragons gracefully winding and emerging from layers of clouds on the ceiling, and four dragons coiling around the four large pillars, illustrating an ancient Buddhist legend.
Many visitors returning to Dieu De Pagoda were amazed that the pagoda managed to preserve the old main hall, and more importantly, this rare artistic masterpiece. "The dragons painted on the ceiling of Dieu De Pagoda's old main hall are incredibly beautiful and skillfully rendered. Despite the ups and downs of history and the deliberations during the renovation process, the pagoda managed to keep it – truly a rare feat," praised Mr. Nguyen Duy Vu from Hue City.
Hopes for the Best Possible Preservation
According to our research, this main hall was rebuilt under the leadership of Most Venerable Dieu Hoang, with contributions also solicited from Empress Dowager Tu Cung (mother of Emperor Bao Dai). This work was carried out from 1953 to 1955.
The inauguration ceremony took place in 1955. The "Long Van Khe Hoi" mural was painted between 1953 and 1955, not during the Khai Dinh era as some sources have suggested. The ceiling of the main hall was not constructed from solid reinforced concrete but rather with a method of spreading wire mesh and plaster, which is of relatively low quality. Although the pagoda has contacted several individuals who lived at Dieu De Pagoda from 1951 onwards to gather information, the artist's identity remains unknown.
Previously, since its construction by Emperor Thieu Tri in 1844, Dieu De Pagoda featured a wooden structure in the distinctive imperial architectural style of the Nguyen Dynasty, which evolved from the traditional Hue garden house (nhà rường) architecture. The complex underwent numerous renovations; while later scales were not as grand as the original, it maintained its old architectural style until 1951.

Today, Dieu De Pagoda stands as a prominent landmark in Hue, a region often called the "Land of Zen Capital." Annually, the Buddha Bathing Ceremony and Buddha Procession of Hue Buddhism are held at the pagoda during Vesak. A unique aspect of this pagoda is its strong imperial characteristics, closely associated with Emperor Thieu Tri, the third emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty. From its inception until 1945, Dieu De Pagoda was classified by the Nguyen Dynasty as a National Pagoda (alongside Giac Hoang, Thien Mu, and Thanh Duyen pagodas).
Venerable Thich Hai Duc, Abbot of Dieu De Pagoda, stated that after relocating the old main hall further back, the pagoda reinforced the surrounding walls, but otherwise left the "Long Van Khe Hoi" mural on the ceiling almost untouched. This main hall now serves as an ancestral hall, dedicated to worshipping Buddha and emperors.
"We made every effort to preserve the artwork, but the pagoda is almost unable to intervene with its conservation due to insufficient resources," shared Venerable Hai Duc. He also mentioned that by moving it back and raising it higher than before, the space has become quite airy. Venerable Hai Duc hopes that in the future, experts and like-minded individuals will come together to find the best possible ways to preserve this unique and rare dragon painting, housed within this famous ancient pagoda in the former imperial capital.
