Minh Thanh Pagoda in Gia Lai offers architecture that beautifully evokes the spirit of the Land of the Rising Sun – a truly unmissable stop for any traveler visiting Gia Lai.
A Captivating Spiritual and Cultural Destination
Gia Lai is renowned for its majestic natural landscapes, endless coffee plantations, and picturesque "sea lakes." Beyond that, it's home to Minh Thanh Pagoda, a unique and ancient temple, offering a peaceful and profound sanctuary for those seeking tranquility.
Minh Thanh Pagoda is located less than 2 km from Pleiku city center. Perched on a gentle hill, the pagoda is often enveloped in the mystical mist of the mountain town. Minh Thanh Pagoda is not only a source of pride for the local people but also a captivating attraction in Pleiku.
The pagoda was built in 1964 by Most Venerable Thích Giác Đạo, serving as a place of worship and incense offering for local Buddhists. Throughout historical upheavals, parts of the pagoda suffered damage. In 1997, it underwent restoration and the addition of new structures. Today, Minh Thanh Pagoda boasts a remarkably distinct new look. Its highlight is the architectural style, a blend of Japanese and Chinese influences, which imbues the temple with an ancient and impressive charm. From a distance, it resembles a miniature palace nestled in the misty mountain town of Pleiku.

Upon arrival, visitors are immediately struck by a majestic and imposing 9-story relic stupa. This stupa features a strikingly unique cinnabar red color, a hue traditionally used in Buddhist temples, symbolizing reverence.
The stupa stands 72 meters tall, housing four meticulously and vividly carved statues of Avalokiteshvara with a thousand hands and a thousand eyes. Adorned with vermilion lacquer and gilded gold, the stupa is incredibly prominent and eye-catching from afar, making it one of Pleiku city's tallest architectural marvels.

A unique feature of the relic stupa is its Japanese-style architecture, characterized by distinct curved roofs. According to a monk, this stupa was built from the top down, a reverse of conventional construction methods. When the abbot invited construction teams to bid on the project, everyone shook their heads, deeming it too difficult. However, a team led by Mr. Sau, who had built many pagodas in the area, bravely accepted the challenge. Furthermore, this stupa serves as a repository for over 10,000 invaluable Buddhist scriptures.

Upon entering the pagoda, the most striking feature is the statue of the Bodhisattva Quan Am, positioned centrally at the entrance. Her benevolent and compassionate face resembles a kind mother welcoming her child home from afar. Next, one can admire the architecture of the two towers, the Bell Tower and the Ancestor Tower, located in front of the main hall, creating a sense of balance and harmony.
Within the pagoda grounds, the statue of Bodhisattva Quan Am stands centrally, surrounded by rows of trees and stone pillars. On the path to the main hall, you'll encounter large paintings depicting Buddhist teachings for practitioners and all sentient beings. The spacious and airy courtyard is adorned with charming miniature landscapes, complemented by a pond, lush trees, and vibrant flowers, creating a harmonious and serene atmosphere for the pagoda's solemn setting.
Sharing her feelings about visiting Minh Thanh Pagoda, Ms. Hong Anh, a tourist from Hanoi, remarked, “This is my first time in Gia Lai, and I feel so fortunate to have discovered Minh Thanh Pagoda. Coming here, exploring and learning about the pagoda's history has been a deeply moving experience.”

Every detail and corner within the pagoda possesses its own distinct uniqueness. According to a mason working at the temple, the pagoda's main doors are made of gõ wood, standing 6 meters tall and 4 tấc thick, considered among the largest doors in Vietnam. The intricate carvings depicting the Four Heavenly Kings are quite elaborate.
The pagoda's architecture is built following a simplified form of Mandala. The circle symbolizes a fully bloomed lotus, which is fundamental in Vajrayana Buddhist cosmology. The patterns and motifs carved here are all based on the philosophical principles of Esoteric Buddhism.
At the center stands the main hall, 16 meters high, with its roof tiled with precious Tây Nguyên pơ mu wood. In front of the main hall are 18 stone statues of Arhats, each depicting a different posture and expression, symbolizing the 18 varying emotions of human life. These 18 statues further enhance the pagoda's powerful solemnity. On either side are architectural structures such as the monks' living quarters, refectory, lecture hall, meditation hall, and scripture library. The relic stupa is located to the right of the main hall.

The Từ Ân Tower, dedicated to the founding patriarch, is also situated to the left of the main hall. This tower features a three-tiered roof, covered with dragon-scale tiles, and adorned with stylized dragons and lotus flowers. An exquisitely carved stone statue of Amitābha Buddha, standing 7.5 meters tall and weighing 40 tons, is majestically enshrined amidst the Liên Trì lotus pond, with weeping willows gracefully surrounding the water's surface. This is a place where monks and Buddhists frequently come to chant sutras and pay homage to Buddha. The meticulously crafted and refined statues within this sacred space lead people to a realm of peace.
To the left of the main hall, there is also a bell tower enshrining a magnificent 4-ton great bell. A staircase leads up to the bell tower, offering visitors the chance to admire the bell and the surrounding pagoda scenery. Furthermore, Minh Thanh Pagoda boasts one of the largest bronze incense burners, standing 4 meters tall and weighing 4 tons, located in front of the Liên Trì pond.
As a native of Gia Lai, Ms. Lê Diệu Ngọc shared, “Amidst life's busyness, fatigue, or stress, I often come here. The sound of the pagoda bell and the resonant chanting from the main hall bring such peace to my heart. I usually visit the pagoda on weekdays, as it gets very crowded with Buddhists on holidays, Tết, full moon days, and the first day of the lunar month; weekdays are quieter and more serene.”

A visitor named Minh Chau shared, “I personally love visiting pagodas. This time, arriving here and seeing the incredibly unique architecture, I lingered on the stone steps, sketching in my journal to preserve these moments and interesting experiences. This is one of the most beautiful pagodas I've ever visited.”

Another impressive aspect of Minh Thanh Pagoda is its incredibly lush and refreshing green space. Trees are interspersed and arranged harmoniously and elegantly with miniature ponds. Graceful weeping willows cast their shadows over the water, winding paths meander between rows of shady green trees, and climbing vines densely cover walls... creating a beautiful and delightful sight.
If you're visiting Pleiku, you should definitely make a stop at Minh Thanh Pagoda to immerse yourself in its serene and peaceful atmosphere, a place that preserves invaluable cultural heritage.
