Gia Lai: A Beautiful and Captivating Invitation from the 'Wild Sunflower Week - Chư Đăng Ya Volcano'

Chư Păh — the season here transforms into a breathtaking spectacle as wild sunflowers burst into a brilliant golden bloom. This vibrant natural beauty then gracefully blends with the resonant, echoing sounds of traditional gongs, creating an atmosphere and aesthetic that profoundly captures the unique soul of the Central Highlands.
As if by nature's own rhythm, returning year after year, in late autumn, when cool breezes gently caress the skin, the rosy-cheeked, pink-lipped girls of Gia Lai in general, and Chư Păh in particular, gracefully perform their xoang dances, accompanied by the resounding gongs and the crackling light of campfires. This is also when the wild sunflowers unfurl their buds, bloom, and display their inviting golden hues.
This beautiful season also marks the time when the Chư Păh District People's Committee organizes the "Wild Sunflower & Chư Đăng Ya Volcano Festival," inviting locals and tourists alike to visit and explore the natural splendor of the region.
Unlocking Potential for Tourism-Driven Economic Growth
Mr. Nay Kiên, Chairman of the Chư Păh District People's Committee, Gia Lai Province, shared that Chư Păh boasts many beautiful and captivating attractions, including the Ialy Hydropower Plant, Princess Waterfall, Phung Village, Kép Village (in Ia Mơ Nông Commune), a century-old pine forest, Bửu Minh Pagoda, Núi Một, and most notably, Chư Đăng Ya Volcano. Chư Păh is also one of the districts in Gia Lai Province that meticulously preserves the distinctive cultural identity of the Jrai and Bahnar ethnic minority communities. This includes the UNESCO-recognized Space of Gong Culture, a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, along with traditional festivals, customs, and practices that have been maintained for millennia.

Simultaneously, it serves to promote the district's image, introduce its potential for tourism, agricultural, and industrial development, and showcase its distinctive products to friends and visitors from everywhere. Ultimately, it seeks to boost investment, foster cooperation and linkages between Chư Păh and other districts and provinces nationwide, and create national tourism circuits that combine sightseeing with relaxation activities. The festival also aims to attract investment in agriculture, gradually building sustainable value chains for some of the district's key products, and highlight the area's potential, advantages, and preferential policies to draw investors into tourism, agriculture, and rural development within the district.

Exciting Activities at the Festival
At the 2023 "Wild Sunflower & Chư Đăng Ya Volcano Festival" in Chư Păh District, visitors will not only admire one of the world's most beautiful volcanoes – a prominent landmark for Gia Lai tourism – and gaze upon the brilliant yellow wild sunflowers blanketing the hillsides. They'll also immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere, experience unique cultural activities, watch artisans demonstrate traditional basket weaving, wood carving, brocade weaving, and ethnic musical instrument making, and even learn to try these folk arts themselves. Moreover, they can actively participate in cultural activities that truly embody the spirit of the Central Highlands.

Mr. Nguyễn Minh Đức, Head of the Chư Păh District Department of Culture and Information, shared that the festival's activities will primarily take place in Ia Gri Village, the volcano area, and other locations in Chư Đang Ya Commune and Nghĩa Hưng Commune (Chư Păh District). An essential highlight will be the gong performance parade featuring hundreds of "artists" from various hamlets. From 4 PM on November 10-11, these parade groups will perform gong music, xoang dances, and costumed accompaniments, moving from the communal longhouse (nhà rông) in Ia Gri Village around the base of Chư Đăng Ya Volcano.
In their daily lives, the Jrai people consider the "New Rice Ceremony" (Cúng lúa mới) to be one of their most significant rituals. With the aim of preserving this traditional cultural practice from fading over time, the Chư Đang Ya Commune People's Committee, in collaboration with the Gia Lai Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, the District Youth Union, and relevant agencies, will faithfully reconstruct the "New Rice Ceremony" at the communal longhouse (nhà rông) courtyard in Ia Gri Village. This ritual is observed by families and the community to express gratitude to the deities who have blessed them with a bountiful harvest, yielding heavy rice grains "like a cow's tail." It is also an occasion for each family and the community to pray to the deities for continued blessings in the next season, hoping for favorable rain, gentle winds, and prosperous crops.
"This is the first year we are recreating this ritual during the Wild Sunflower Festival at Chư Đăng Ya Volcano, so the preparations have been meticulously guided and implemented by the District Party Committee and the District People's Committee, ensuring accuracy and authenticity. This is not only an opportunity for the Jrai community in the area to come together and preserve their ethnic group's traditional beauty, but also a chance for visitors from all over to experience the rich cultural identity of the local people. Through this, tourists can feel the simplicity and closeness of the daily lives of the Jrai people in Chư Đang Ya in particular, and the people of Gia Lai in general," Mr. Nguyễn Minh Đức shared.
Throughout the three main days of the "Wild Sunflower & Chư Đăng Ya Volcano Festival," Chư Păh district artisans will showcase their skills in traditional basket weaving, brocade weaving, wood carving, crafting ethnic musical instruments, and creating household items for the Jrai and Bahnar ethnic groups, all for the enjoyment of visitors. At the festival, guests will have the opportunity to directly experience weaving baskets and brocades alongside these skilled artisans.
At the 2023 "Wild Sunflower & Chư Đăng Ya Volcano Festival," locals and tourists can also enjoy a performance themed "Vibrant Rhythms of Rice Pounding." Although this is the first time this activity is being organized, it promises to be highly engaging and captivating. Communes and towns in the district will send artisans, divided into teams, to pound 5kg of rice. From 4 PM to 9 PM on November 11th, the communal longhouse (nhà rông) in Ia Gri Village will host an artistic exchange program titled "Central Highlands Ethnic Musical Instrument Night Festival," featuring clubs, bands, and art troupes from both within and outside the province.
To create an exciting atmosphere for visitors, the Organizing Committee will host competitions featuring traditional sports such as stick pushing, stilt walking, tug-of-war, sack racing, and mountain climbing, as well as folk games like blindfolded pot smashing, blindfolded duck catching, and slow bicycle riding. This competition is not just between the communes and towns of the district; it also provides an opportunity for visitors to participate and compete in sports and games that beautifully reflect the culture of the Central Highlands people.
For the Jrai and Bahnar communities of this region, this is an occasion to introduce and promote the distinctive products of the local people. Visitors can savor rustic dishes such as cơm lam (bamboo-tube rice), grilled chicken, rượu ghè (jar wine), cassava leaves, cà đắng (bitter eggplant), and grilled meat. Local specialties like coffee, pepper, wild bananas, rượu ghè (jar wine), dried bamboo shoots, organic vegetables, Sê San River featherback fish, mushrooms, honey, arrowroot vermicelli, arrowroot flour, and Chư Đăng Ya sweet potatoes will also be available, catering to the shopping, sightseeing, and dining needs of tourists.

Additionally, the Organizing Committee will feature an exhibition area displaying photographs that capture the beauty of traditional culture, festivals, beliefs, natural landscapes, people, delicious cuisine, culinary specialties, and various tourist, entertainment, and relaxation spots within Chư Păh District. There will also be folk wood statues, traditional ethnic musical instruments crafted by Jrai and Bahnar artisans in Chư Păh, and cultural and historical works, including interesting books about Gia Lai.
The "Wild Sunflower & Chư Đăng Ya Volcano Festival" 2023 is a significant cultural, sports, and tourism event that contributes to preserving and promoting the cultural identity of ethnic groups in Chư Păh District. It will serve as a destination for sightseeing and experiences, a bridge to promote the district's image, introduce its potential, and call for and attract companies, businesses, organizations, and individuals to invest in the development of tourism, agriculture, and industry in Chư Păh District in particular, and Gia Lai in general.
